Their bespoke perfume formula is recorded in her database and can beĀ reordered at any future time. Now, āThe Nose that Knowsā finally relates her relationship toĀ fragrances. Years in the making, Phillipsā long-awaited and much-anticipated book The PowerĀ of Perfume: How to Choose It, Wear it and Enjoy It! (Central Park South Publishing Company;Ā $19.95) is finally here and available on Amazon amzn.to/3v5resK and Barnes & Noble bit.ly/3cidbrpĀ

The 280-page book, premiering in bookstores worldwide and Amazon is filled with highlights from Phillipsā career, myths about perfume and little-known-facts about the intoxicating effect of fragrance on all your senses. The Power of Perfume: How to Choose It, Wear it and Enjoy It! also includes photos of celebrities Phillips has worked with throughout her career. She has created fragrances thousands of Fragrance Lovers, and for the Hollywood elite, from Katie Holmes to Jamie Foxx and Zendaya, and the late Cicely Tyson. Thereās plenty more in Phillipsā book, but to reveal it would ruin the surprise. āItās an homage to perfumes, fragrance and scents (which ever you want to call it) and how it really helps people gain confidence, reflect their individuality and create a signature,ā says Phillips. āI always ask my clients, āWhy wear what everyone else wears when you can create your own?āā

Phillips launched her book at an online virtual appearance The Art of Scent sponsored by The National Arts Club to talk about her book and career Watch the presentation here: Sue Phillips interview
Phillips, a native of South Africa, has lived in New York for years. An internationallyĀ recognized expert on fragrance, she has worked in senior level positions at many of the beautyĀ industryās top companies, including Elizabeth Arden (working on licensees Chloe and Lagerfeld),Ā Lancaster on the Davidoff brands and Chopard, Trish McEvoy and developed her first 3Ā fragrances; LancĆ“me Paris and Burberry, where she created scents for its āSociety byĀ Burberryā brand. It was at Tiffany & Co., though, that Phillips achieved her renown: creating itsĀ first ever scent, TIFFANY, which became one of the companyās top sellers. She followed that upĀ with Tiffany for Men.Ā
Phillips ventured out on her own in 2009, creating a signature atelier in New York calledĀ āThe Scentariumā Last year, when the building was sold she created a pop-up āscentĀ experienceā at Vanessa Noel Shoes on the Upper East Side.Ā Ā
āMy mission,ā she says, āis to diffuse fragrance out of the bottle and to createĀ memorable fragrance āexperiences.āāĀ

Phillips traces her love of fragrance back to her childhood. Her mother, Grace Phillips, was a musician and South Africaās foremost calligrapher and made sure to surround the familyĀ with art and culture. She was inspired by her motherās singing and performing, and observed her motherās exquisite artwork, Phillips says. āArt, Music and Culture were inculcated in me andĀ serendipitously it was part of my DNA which I never fully realized.ā Until one day, when an unexpected curiosity struck.Ā Ā

āI started to think about colors and sounds and what they would smell like,ā she says.Ā āIn South Africa thereās beautiful bright sunshine and gorgeous light and natural foliage andĀ flowers and I would correlate fragrance and color and think about what could that smell like.āĀ
She was on to something. Scent, scientists have long known, is the most powerful of theĀ five senses -- and the only one that connects memory, emotion and taste.Ā Ā

āOur sense of smell is our most powerful sense after sight,ā Phillips explains, ābut it isĀ the most forgotten and ignored. Our olfactory hub in our limbic system triggers memories and emotions. People also tell me that when they are cleaning out an attic, and they come across aĀ memento from a loved one, such as a scarf or a book, that they are immediately reminded ofĀ that person or situation. It is so powerful!ā āSadly due to Covid-19, many people have beenĀ affected by sensory loss and they report how devastating itās been for them; they are not ableĀ to enjoy food, and therefore socializing becomes challenging because without being able toĀ taste and smell, they opt out of getting together with friends and family over festive occasionsā.

āI am very excited to be launching my book at The National Arts Club, and on āFragrantĀ Fridaysā at 6pm EST and āScentual Sundaysā at 12pm EST in my #Clubhouse room The Power ofĀ Perfumeā where Sue has connected with thousands of fragrance lovers globally in the lastĀ month. āIt has been a labor of love and I am honored to have been involved in this remarkableĀ industry and being able to do what I love, and to create a difference in peopleās lives throughĀ our most powerful sense!āĀ Phillips enthuses.Ā
